In order to prevent future dental problems, your child should see a pediatric dentist when his or her first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. This visit gives your child an opportunity to meet us in a fun and friendly way that typically involves very little treatment. During the examination, our doctor will check all of your child’s existing teeth for decay, examine your child’s bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay in the room during the exam.
If indicated, we may recommend dental x-ray for older kids. However, we are very conservative and careful to limit the amount of radiation to which children are exposed.

A comprehensive cavity prevention program includes promoting healthy eating, daily brushing and flossing, proper use of fluoride toothpaste, and routine dental check ups. Keeping cavities at bay is a team effort between dentist, parent, and the child. Not all kids’ have the same cavity risk, so it’s important to consult with your child’s dentist about the right preventative measures. Our office typically recommends professional fluoride varnish application and sealant based on each child’s individual needs and cavity risk.
Many children’s fear of the dentist stems from unfavorable stories they overheard from parents, siblings, or other kids. It’s natural for children to be scared or anxious about possible pain or discomfort. Our staff is here to listen and tailor our approaches to help each child overcome their fear. Most parents do not realize a child’s baby teeth are as important as permanent teeth. Besides obvious functions of eating and speech, healthy baby teeth are essential to guide adult teeth into their proper positions. Premature loss of baby teeth because of untreated cavities or infection can result in teeth tilting toward the empty space. A space maintainer can help to hold the space to allow the adult teeth to come in properly. Early diagnosis and timely correction with space maintainers can relieve the problem. Our pediatric dentist monitors growth and development at your child’s every visit and if necessary, will collaborate with orthodontists to determine the optimum time for braces.
Early Orthodontic Treatment, also known as Interceptive Orthodontic Treatment or Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment is when children begin treatment while they’re still growing and have most of their primary teeth. The goal is to direct a child’s growth and development in order to fix o prevent certain kinds of malocclusions (problem with size, position or spacing of the teeth or jaws), so that treatment is easier down the road. In cases like a severe underbite or overbite, for example, when the face ad jaw are fully developed, it is much harder to manipulate them and get dramatic results and waiting until adulthood could mean needing surgery. With early orthodontic treatment, we’re intercepting and correcting the issue before it has a chance to become a FULL BLOWN PROBLEM.
There are cases our doctor will utilize appliances to guide facial and jaw growth. Typically, phase 1 orthodontic treatment involves a child wearing an appliance like a space maintainer, a palatal expander or limited braces. At Cosmo Dental, we always aim to finish early orthodontic treatment in 12 months or less. As soon as we achieve our goals of Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment, your child get a resting period where we let the remaining baby teeth erupt out. There, around the age 12 or 13, they’ll usually begin Phase 1 treatment which may consist of braces. This will help us lock in their bite and make any necessary changes to give them a healthy, functional smile
