Learn about Dental Implants at Cosmo Dental

For patients missing teeth as a result of dental accident, extraction, or decay, dental implants are an effective and permanent alternative to traditional tooth loss solutions like dentures or bridges. Dr. Isabelle Segui and her team at Cosmo Dental recommend this restoration for any patient looking for a long-lasting, natural looking tooth loss treatment.

Why Should I Consider Dental Implants?

While easy to use, traditional dental restorations for missing teeth often fail to fully treat the entire smile. As prosthetics like dentures or fixed bridges sit on top of the gums, they do not incorporate the underlying jaw bone into treatment. Over time, this can cause the bone to deteriorate in a process known as resorption. If left untreated, dentures patients may experience facial sagging, difficulty performing normal dental function, and loose prosthetics.

In contrast, dental implants incorporate all parts of the smile, providing patients with a truly comprehensive tooth replacement. Dental implants are created by securing a titanium post where your tooth’s root used to be. This implant fuses with the underlying jawbone, providing a sturdy base for a crown. This fusing process creates a strong bond, called osseointegration, making your dental implants much stronger and sturdier than dentures.

Dental implant results at Cosmo Dental

Dr. Segui and Associates offer dental implant services at Cosmo Dental. Our trained dental team have extensive experience working with many types of implants. If a patient is needing a brand new dental implant, the entire Cosmo Dental Team is extensively trained for the implants to be surgically placed.

Once the jaw has healed, Dr. Segui and her associates restore the implants by securing the crown to the dental implant.

The healing period gives time for the osseointegration process to occur, so that by the time our trained doctor secures that cap of the implant (crown), the tooth is already firmly set into the jawbone.

What are the Benefits of Dental Implants over Alternatives?

Dental implants offer our patients many significant advancements over traditional dentures. These benefits include:

  • Minimal bone loss.
  • Jaw structure preservation.
  • Natural-looking, permanent tooth replacement.
  • No dietary restrictions.
  • Easy maintenance and care.

IMPLANTS VS. DENTURES

Here are just a few of the benefits of dental implants vs. dentures.

Dental implants are permanent.

They’re secure — no more slipping

You can eat whatever you want without restriction

You care for them just like natural teeth — no more overnight soaking

They look and act just like real teeth

They can improve your confidence!

What to Expect During a Dental Implant Procedure?

During the dental implant procedure, a missing tooth is replaced with a synthetic tooth that’s surgically attached to the jawbone via a titanium post, or “root.” In some cases the tooth can be removable, but it usually feels more stable and natural when it’s permanent.

The process usually requires several visits to the dentist in order to take measurements and molds, as well as to secure the implants. The procedure for installing the posts is outpatient and is performed using either local or general anesthesia. Recovery times can vary, but patients are given a number of options for controlling postoperative discomfort. Once the gums are healed, the replacement teeth can then be attached.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants at Cosmo Dental can help restore your smile whether you’re missing one tooth or all of them. During your initial consultation, your dentist will help you determine which type of implant is best for you.

  • Single implants replace a single missing tooth.
  • Multiple implants can cover a gap where several teeth are missing.
  • Overdenture implants are for patients who have lost all of their teeth, or all the teeth on one jawline.
  • Mini and micro implants are smaller than standard implants and take up less space. They’re used when patients prefer to fill small gaps between teeth with an implant vs. a bridge, which is less stable.

Implant Restoration

At Cosmo Dental, we offer dental implant restoration for patients looking to complete their dental implant procedure, as well as restore any appliances that may have become damaged due to normal wear. The dental implant process typically involves several dental appointments over the course of a few weeks. These visits help to ensure proper fit and comfort for all of our patients.

Each artificial crown is designed to fit the existing structure and color of your remaining teeth. The end result is a fully functional and seamless smile that will last you for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants will last at least 30 years. In most cases, your implant will last you for the rest of your life, because it will permanently bond with your jaw and gum tissue, becoming a natural part of your body. As long as you care for them properly, it is very unlikely for your dental implants to fail or fail or wear out.
‍
However, this is not necessarily true of implant-supported restorations. Restorations like crowns, fixed bridges, and implant-supported dentures will be exposed to a lot of wear & tear over the years as you eat and chew. Your implant-supported restorations may need to be replaced a few times throughout the life of your dental implants.

This is why it’s important to see the team at Cosmo Dental every six months for preventive care, such as an oral exam and teeth cleaning. We can ensure that your implants and your implant-supported restorations are healthy, and will continue to serve you well throughout the coming years and decades.

Dental implants are recommended for patients who have a strong and healthy jaw that can support the placement of an implant. If your jaw has become weak due to bone resorption after tooth loss, it may be possible to strengthen it with a bone graft or a sinus lift. While bone grafting will allow you to have an implant, it will require additional surgical treatment, and prolong the dental implant treatment process.
‍
Your mouth must also be free of any major oral health issues such as periodontal disease or tooth decay. These issues must be resolved before you can have an implant placed at Cosmo Dental.
‍
Non-smokers are also preferred for dental implants. Smoking and using any kind of oral tobacco can seriously impair the healing and recovery process, and lead to higher risks of complications during your treatment. You should quit smoking or using tobacco before getting dental implants.

Your treatment will usually take between 6-12 months, but this can vary depending on the patient. To begin, you’ll see Dr. Segui to determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implants.
‍
If you’re approved, our team will begin creating your dental implant placement plan. You’ll come back in a few weeks, and Dr. Isabelle Segui will place your implant into your gum and jaw tissue. You’ll get a set of recovery instructions, and be sent home to heal.
‍
Over the next few months, you’ll come into our office for a few follow-up appointments. We’ll check your healing progress, and Dr. Segui will take impressions of your implant and gums, which will be used by our dental lab to create your permanent implant-supported restoration.
‍
About 2 weeks before your final appointment, you’ll come into our office to have an “abutment” placed on your implant. This is what connects your implant to your implant-supported restoration, such as a dental crown. Once your mouth heals, you’ll come in for your final appointment. Dr. Segui will check the fit of your implant-supported restoration, and then bond it into place permanently, completing the procedure.
