New Patient Dental Exam

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR
NEW PATIENT DENTAL EXAM

Has it been a while since you’ve last seen a dentist? Are you looking for a new dentist? First dental exam ever? No worries, we’ve got you covered.

As a new patient at Cosmo Dental, you might be wondering what to expect from your new patient dental exam.

Besides a friendly staff, comfortable surroundings and skilled dentists, you can expect a comprehensive dental exam that’s thorough and painless.

Your one hour exam will include both an evaluation and a consultation. Your dentist will look over the health of your teeth and gums, as well as check your bite jaw, screen for oral cancer and examine for any signs of gum disease or tooth decay, including look over any previous restorative dental work you may have. Your exam will also include digital x-rays, as well as photos of your teeth and your smile.

Your overall health and oral hygiene will be evaluated, including your health history, your diet and medications. During this time, you will also have an opportunity to discuss your dental concerns and long-term dental goals.

By fully evaluating your existing oral health and consulting with you, we’ll be able to determine what type of  teeth cleaning treatment you might need, as well as help you develop and maintain an appropriate treatment plan that best suits your needs and expectations.

Keeping your teeth healthy and helping you make your smile stand out is our goal. We look forward to meeting you!

Comprehensive New Patient Dental Exam

As a new patient at Cosmo Dental, your first dental exam is much more than just a look at your teeth with X-rays! It’s a thorough 1 hour exam and consultation with one of  skilled dentists in addition to your getting X-rays.

So what’s included in your exam? A lot! Here’s what to expect from your new patient dental exam:

A discussion of any of your dental concerns, as well as your long-term dental goals.

A review of your health history, concerns, diet and medications.

During the initial evaluation, our doctor conducts a comprehensive assessment of your overall oral health. This includes a detailed review of your dental and medical history, discussion of your current concerns, and a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, bite, and surrounding oral structures. Diagnostic radiographs are required for all new patients unless recent x-rays are provided, as these are essential for detecting underlying conditions and creating an accurate and personalized treatment plan.

These radiographic interpretations help our doctors identify tooth decay, bone loss, cavities, and other underlying dental conditions. The x-rays also allow us to assess the current position and condition of your teeth and roots for proper diagnosis and treatment planning.

This is where we look over your teeth to evaluate the health of your teeth, including any previous restorative dental work you’ve had, such as fillings, crowns, bridges, or dental implants. We will also examine each of your teeth for any signs of tooth decay, checking the surface of every tooth.

We will evaluate the health of your gums and look for any signs of periodontal diseases, disease of the gums. This exam includes using a tiny measuring stick (periodontal probe) to measure and chart your pocket depths. We will also look for any signs of gum recession and other signs of periodontal disease.

We also take photos of the inside of your mouth, as well as your facial features, like when you smile. Intraoral photos help us examine areas of your mouth and teeth that are otherwise difficult to visualize, like detecting cavities or cracks that an x-ray can’t often reveal. Extraoral photos are great to see your before and after pictures should you chose to have various dental procedures, like Clear Aligners, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening and other cosmetic dental services.

Occlusion refers to the contact between your teeth when you bring your jaws together. This examination will check how well your teeth fit together by examining your bite and jaw.

As you can see, there’s actually a lot involved in your one hour dental exam. Once you’ve completed your examination, we’ll have a good assessment of the overall health of your teeth and gums. This will help us determine what type of periodontal treatment you’ll need, so that we can then schedule your appropriate type of teeth cleaning.
