What is Airflow Teeth cleaning using Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

  • To put it simply, GBT is THE BEST PROFESSIONAL TOOTH CLEANING SYSTEM IN THE WORLD!
  • GBT is a revolutionary dental hygiene system that replaces old-fashioned teeth cleaning methods that use painful hand instruments, spinning rubber cups, and abrasive polishing pastes.
  • While older techniques scratch away teeth & restorations while failing to remove all biofilm, GBT is a true wellness dental experience for the mouth that eliminates pain & fear and provides unparalleled comfort while removing up to 100% of biofilm without damage to teeth.

WHAT IS DENTAL BIOFILM?

You’re probably familiar with that filmy feeling of unbrushed teeth, that’s biofilm. It’s a sticky film that coats teeth and hardens over time to tartar or dental calculus when it isn’t removed. Biofilm contains harmful bacterial micro-organisms that multiply in colonies and can cause local and systemic disease. Some of the most common include tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis (bleeding gums), periodontal disease (gum infections and receding gums & bone,) tooth loss, and implant loss.

In addition to local disease, modern studies show that biofilm triggers systemic diseases and increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease, premature birth, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and more.

AirFlow stain removal vs regular dental cleaning: which is better?

Airflow technology utilizes air and a streamlined jet of water that removes the plaque and debris from the gums up to a depth of 5mm. At the same time, it also polishes all the surfaces of the teeth gently using sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder. A regular dental cleaning cannot reach this depth and also are very abrasive to the tooth structure. AirFlow oral hygiene treatment can also be used to clean dental implants, veneers, crowns, and bridges, as it is gentle yet effective.

If you are someone who feels uneasy at the sound and feel of metal scrapping on your teeth, Airflow Dental hygiene treatment is for you since it uses compressed air and water. This means Airflow teeth cleaning is also more comfortable for you as a patient. The Airflow teeth cleaning powder is now available in different flavours like mint; this makes it much more pleasant. The system is also known to be pain-free which adds to the patient comfort.

Airflow dental hygiene is ideal for patients who suffer from dental sensitivity. Regular dental hygiene methods lead to vibrations and heat production, which leads to increased sensitivity. This problem is now obliterated with the introduction of Airflow oral hygiene as there is no vibration or heat production with this technology.

Observational studies have shown that air polishing is three times faster at tartar and debris removal than regular dental practices. Teeth are also cleaned in a much less abrasive manner. AirFlow oral hygiene procedure is also a safe cleaning method before orthodontic appointments. It does not interfere with the bonding procedure and removes the persistent stains and plaque deposits much more efficiently. This proves the superiority of AirFlow stain removal offered at our dental office over traditional options.

AIRFLOW BEFORE AND AFTER

Airflow teeth cleaning is efficient in removing stains caused by coffee, tea, tobacco and alcohol in one sitting. Apart from this, it can also be used to remove staining caused by certain medications, as well as plaque and debris removal.

You will be able to appreciate a brighter, healthier, and sparkling smile after your first sitting with the Airflow procedure. However, it is not a teeth whitening treatment and may not effectively remove stains caused by congenital dental issues and fluorosis. You can schedule an appointment with us now to know how Airflow technology can help you to a brighter and healthy smile.

The Components of Airflow

The Airflow technology harnesses the power of:

  • A precise jet stream of distilled water
  • Cleansing powders, including sodium bicarbonate, osspraycalcium sodium, phosphosiliscate, and erythritol
  • Compressed air

The Dynamics of AirFlow

This groundbreaking approach utilizes the kinetic energy of the jet combined with the cleansing solution to dislodge dirt from your tooth surfaces without any direct contact with the enamel or gums.

THE BENEFITS OF AIRFLOW CLEANING

Gone are the days of discomfort. AirFlow teeth cleaning offers a warm, gentle water stream that caresses your gums and tooth surfaces. The harsh sensations of traditional ultrasonic scalers and polishing brushes are replaced by a soothing experience akin to a sauna bath.

In just 10 to 12 minutes, you’ll be in and out with a rejuvenated smile. Compared to the traditional 40-second per tooth process, Airflow reduces your chair time by almost half.

Airflow reaches even the most intricate areas of your mouth, from crowded teeth contact points to wisdom tooth surroundings. It’s not just for regular cleaning; Airflow seamlessly complements specialized gum procedures like flap surgery or laser treatments, enhancing their effects and sanitizing treatment sites.

Say goodbye to unreachable plaque and debris. Airflow effectively removes them using an air and water jet, penetrating up to 5 mm deep. It’s safe for various oral surfaces, including metal braces, dental implants, ceramic crowns, and veneers, as well as natural dental enamel and gum tissue.

The specially formulated Airflow powders don’t just remove stains and biofilms; they inhibit bacterial growth. Glycine, for example, thwarts bacterial reproduction and growth processes, preventing gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis.

Dental implant maintenance with Airflow Technology

  • Guided Biofilm Therapy is the latest technology for the preventative care of dental implants. This system is the “gold standard” for dental implant maintenance5.
  • The Airflow technology cleans easily, effectively and painlessly around the dental implant and restoration, and under the gum line.
  • Guided Biofilm Therapy is “the only predictable solution for implant maintenance” to ensure the “life-long maintenance of implants”6.
  • To this effect, Guided Biofilm Therapy is also the superior maintenance procedure for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment (wearing braces and brackets), to effectively clean around the fixed appliances.

Alternatives to airflow technology

  • The alternative to the AirFlow stain removal procedure is traditional hand scaling and ultrasonic scaling. Hand scaling uses traditional hand scalers; the operator will remove the deposits and stains by hand. Another alternative is powered ultrasonic scalers.

Airflow dental hygiene treatment procedure is safe for adults and children and has proven its efficacy over other dental hygiene procedures. However, there are some situations where it is best to avoid Airflow dental hygiene. The Airflow stain removal technology cannot be carried out when the patients suffer from respiratory diseases like asthma or upper respiratory tract infections as it can exacerbate such conditions. It is best avoided in acute inflammatory conditions of the mouth.

Other contraindications of the AirFlow stain removal technique include:

  • Pregnancy;
  • Lactation;
  • Old age – where the enamel, which is the upper protective layer of the tooth, is thinned out;
  • Presence of extensive caries;
  • Presence of extensive composite restorations where it may be deemed abrasive;
  • Young children (below the age of 10 years) as they may ingest the formulation of the AirFlow technology.

AIRFLOW BE USED TO TREAT GUM DISEASE?

This is one of the major benefits of Airflow. The cleaning action removes the sticky sheet of bacteria, known as “biofilm”, that sits around teeth and gums. This biofilm develops when dental plaque is colonized by bacteria and is the main cause of gum disease. Breaking down this biofilm has been shown to be a crucial aspect in treating gum disease and keeping gums and teeth healthy. Where there are deep pockets around the teeth as a result of gum disease, the special Perioflow nozzle is able to flex and adapt to clean even awkward spaces under the gum line.

Yes! The powder used with Airflow is so gentle that, unlike regular scalers, it is safe to use with dental implants with no risk of scratching or scuffing. It is a great way of keeping implants, and the gums supporting them, clean and healthy
